40% of Chinese consumers are willing to buy wearable devices

According to the latest Mintel report, 40% (43%) of Chinese urban consumers are willing to buy wearables for themselves, but only 32% of respondents believe that the use of wearable devices is very fashionable.

Mintel reports that in 2016, sales of smart bracelets and sales share were higher, and sales of smart bracelets are expected in 2015-2016. Xu Tianyun, a senior technology analyst at Mintel, said, “Young consumers’ acceptance of such products must be higher, but overall, due to the lack of breakthrough products and high penetration of smart phones, they can provide wearable products. Similar features, the wearable device market faces the challenge of sustainable growth, especially smart bracelets and smart watches. For wearables to achieve sustainable growth, breakthrough products and lower entry prices are key."

For functional considerations of wearable devices, Mintel data shows that monitoring comprehensive health data ranks first in all product characteristics (53%), and monitoring family safety and health ranks second (50%). In addition, Chinese male consumers (45%) have significantly higher demand for devices that can connect to other digital products (such as smartphones, cameras) than female consumers (39%), providing local information based on geographic location (eg traffic, weather, etc.) Demand is the highest among Chinese consumers aged 20-24 (46%), and navigation is favored by consumers aged 40-49 (45%).

In this regard, Xu Tianyun said, “Health monitoring is still a big selling point for smart bracelets and smart watches. Moreover, from the perspective of product characteristics of interest to consumers, family-related functions have the potential to motivate purchases.”

In addition, virtual reality (VR) as a high-level emerging technology is being more deeply understood by consumers. According to the Mintel report, 97% of Chinese urban consumers are interested or interested in at least one VR application. The experience of VR watching movies is the most attractive (45%). However, male consumers are more enthusiastic about playing games with VR (39%) and car test drives (31%) than women, and women are more interested. Online shopping (viewing, shopping in virtual stores) (35%), children's entertainment interactions (such as interactive video or games) (25%).

“Consumers are interested in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies.
