Powering the TTL logic must prevent overvoltages, which can destroy the TTL chip very quickly, and any conventional fuse can't effectively protect the TTL chip. Therefore, only other semiconductor circuits can quickly cope with overvoltage and protect the safety of TTL devices.

In the circuit shown below, if the voltage at the output terminal rises above 5.2V, the Zener diode breaks down, triggering the thyristor (SCR) to turn on, causing a rapid short to force the fuse to blow.



The regulator IC is a familiar fixed voltage type of the LM7805. The 7805 is a three-pin regulator that requires a minimum voltage input of 7.5V to maintain stability, a maximum input voltage of 35V and a maximum load current of 1A.

In the circuit, it is shown that the capacitors connected on each side of the integrated circuit are very important for suppressing oscillations and must not be omitted. In particular, the 330nF input capacitor must be connected across the shortest path at the IC's pin.

I chose a 106A thyristor because it can handle anode currents up to 4A at 100V, but has a very sensitive gate that only needs about 200uA. This SCR is only turned on for a short period of time and therefore does not require a heat sink.

The rating of the fuse depends on the circuit and power supply you are using. Assuming a maximum power supply output current of about 200 to 300 mA, it can be used for a 500 mA fuse.

The voltage across the thyristor switch is highly dependent on the value of the Zener diode. You can experiment with different values ​​of Zener diodes to protect other types of circuits. The 4000 series CMOS integrated circuits have a 15V (AE suffix) or 20V supply voltage range (BE suffix) and an overvoltage protection device can be used for these.
