Broadcom launches InConcert Maestro software platform
Broadcom announced the launch of the new InConcert Maestro software platform, which enables developers to more easily add different types of wireless interconnectivity to software applications on communications, computing, and consumer electronics. A unified API (application programming interface) framework that supports Bluetooth 3.0 High Speed and the upcoming Wi-Fi Direct standard will enable device manufacturers and operators to use these technologies to provide easy-to-use business and consumer applications in novel ways .
The InConcert Maestro platform no longer requires manual selection, establishment, and management of basic wireless networks, thus enabling an excellent customer experience. For example, transferring video streams from a PC to a TV becomes simple and intuitive, because Maestro eliminates the hassle of users busy configuring connection technology on both devices. As the personal wireless ecosystem is evolving and expanding, Broadcom designed the InConcert Maestro platform to complete a comprehensive wireless hardware product line, with a view to achieving a transparent turnkey solution for today ’s electronic device users.
Key points:
• The application of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in consumer electronics products continues to increase and evolve. Due to the increasing adoption rate in netbooks, smartphones, televisions, set-top boxes and other devices, it is expected to deliver 216 million by 2013 Wi-Fi interconnected devices (according to In-Stat's market research).
• Due to potential wireless interference issues and the need for advanced system solutions to provide an attractive user experience, integrating Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in consumer electronics products can be challenging. The evolution of these two technologies makes integration more complicated.
o The recently approved Bluetooth v3.0 specification adds a high-speed function that needs to run on a wireless device connected to an 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN).
o A new low-energy Bluetooth specification for medical and healthcare monitoring applications has been adopted, and products using this specification will soon appear on the market.
o Wi-Fi Direct will soon be standardized, using Wi-Fi Direct to achieve peer-to-peer wireless interconnection.
• The InConcert product line succinctly solves interference problems and uses advanced coexistence technology to enhance user experience. However, a large number of wireless interconnection options also add significant complexity to the development of "interconnect applications". Interconnect applications seek to achieve convenient file transfers, streaming media, games, and the use of wireless external devices (such as headsets and keyboards).
• The InConcert Maestro platform uses the following key innovations to avoid the complexity of adding Bluetooth and Wi-Fi interconnections to these applications:
o A unified framework that provides Bluetooth and Wi-Fi interconnection for very easy application development.
o A concise, platform-independent API for all types of products (ie PCs, smartphones, media devices, etc.).
o Technology-independent interconnection. For a given application and available wireless components, choose the wireless technology that works best.
o "Connect everything" wirelessly, users do not need to worry about basic technology, connectivity and use steps.
o Support the recently approved Bluetooth v3.0 + HS standard.
o Mature, industry-proven, standards-based Wi-Fi software that implements 802.11a / b / g / n network interconnection and streaming media delivery.
o Wi-Fi Direct will be supported soon, including peer discovery mechanism.
o Open Interface Standard (OIS) approach to achieve innovation on top of installed wireless capabilities.
• Through the Maestro platform, Broadcom introduced a new interconnection model that significantly reduces the burden of integrating Wi-Fi and Bluetooth into electronic devices. This new software platform further improves Broadcom's comprehensive interconnect hardware product line, and expands Broadcom's leading edge by implementing more interconnect devices and applications.
• Electronic devices using Maestro software will provide a more convenient, more integrated, and more compelling user experience. E.g:
o PCs using Maestro use a special software application to enable users to directly transmit video streams to TVs using Maestro;
o PCs and mobile phones using Maestro can share files, users can play interconnected games on these two devices, and each device can be used to browse the Internet.
• Broadcom will showcase InConcert Maestro technology at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show this week, which is now available to strategic equipment manufacturer partners.
Broadcom executive introduction:
Robert Rango, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Wireless Connectivity Division, Broadcom
"Today, the two most compelling trends in consumer electronics are: the increasing use of wireless technology everywhere; small, downloadable applications that enhance and change the user experience are extremely popular. Our new Maestro Technology is combining these two trends, making it easier than ever to add Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to applications, which will increasingly change the way people use mobile devices to share media, communicate, and interact.
