The University of Edinburgh in Scotland announced on Tuesday that it has developed new technologies to reduce the electricity consumption of Li-Fi networks to 0.5 watts and increase the transmission distance by 10 times.
Li-Fi is a new wireless transmission technology that uses visible light waves for data transmission. It was invented by the German physicist Harald Haas. The technology transmits data by changing the blinking frequency of the room lighting. As long as the lights are turned on indoors, the Internet can be accessed without WiFi.
According to a bulletin issued by the university, the researchers used light waves emitted by micron-sized LEDs to enable Li-Fi networks to transmit data at 1.1 Gbps with less than 0.5 watts of power in 10 meters. The power consumption is only 10 watts. LED bulbs use 5% of electricity.
The study was led by Professor Harald Haas of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and was completed with the US PureLiFi. Harald Haas is known as one of the world's leading LED technology figures.
Visible light communication has become a must for international communications research in the United States, Japan and Europe. Many experts believe that Li-Fi represents the trend of the future mobile Internet. Li-Fi will be much cheaper than WiFi because it uses visible light instead of radio waves to transmit signals. A US market research firm pointed out that the total sales of the visible optical communication technology market is expected to increase significantly from $96 million in 2012 to $6.14 billion in 2018.
In China, there are also companies that are conducting research on Li-Fi network technology. Fudan University successfully realized the use of visible light in the house for network signal transmission in October last year. At that time, the maximum transmission rate was 3.25G, and the average Internet access rate was 150M.
In addition, Qinshang Optoelectronics signed a cooperation agreement with Tsinghua University in May 2013 to establish a LED wireless optical communication project. The two parties officially launched the construction of a joint research institute for schools and enterprises in the field of optical communications, and strive to build it into a national platform.
