Maruzen Petrochemical has made breakthroughs in LED light extraction efficiency

In the LED chip manufacturing process, in order to enable the LED light to be efficiently outputted outward, fine irregularities are generally formed on the surface of the chip. Nippon Maruzen Petrochemical focuses on the UV-curable nanoimprint resin developed by the LED chip. It is possible to form irregularities smaller than the original at a low cost, thereby improving the light extraction efficiency of the LED.

According to Maruzen Petrochemical, nanoimprinted resins are characterized by "excellent etch resistance to fluorine and chlorine gases." For example, the etching selectivity ratio of the sapphire substrate used for the LED is 0.7 to 0.8. The higher the value, the thinner the resin layer for substrate microfabrication. After the resin layer is applied onto a substrate such as sapphire, irregularities are formed by a press molding process. At this time, the thinner the resin layer, the easier the mold is peeled off from the resin, so that the production efficiency can be improved.

The company will strive to adopt the technology in its new plant, which will be launched in the second half of 2011 to 2012, and is now offering prototypes.
