Oculus released an exciting new feature on the Oculus Developers blog earlier this week that allows developers to add DLC support to virtual reality (VR) games. This is possible because Oculus has made changes to support multiple dynamic expansion files. This is a system that is commonly used when adding Downloadable Content (DLC) in games. The Oculus Mobile platform is now available for DLC.
The new features are currently in beta, but this means that developers will be able to launch new content for applications that already exist on the Oculus Mobile Store. Whether this new content is adding an extra character or new level to the video game or bringing additional images and media files into the experience, the new DLC support will provide developers with a larger application size and additional Income opportunities.
For consumers, these new features mean that DLC content will soon be pushed to Oculus mobile VR games, which is good news for users. The Oculus Developer Blog does not mention whether the uploaded DLC content requires additional prices, which means that the game's free DLC may also appear. Until developers can see the name of the game by launching various DLC plug-ins, it remains to be seen how the features of these Oculus Mobile storefronts will be presented.
One thing to note is that storage space will be a matter of concern. With Oculus Go's built-in 32GB storage capacity, large-capacity DLC content takes up storage space. Of course, Oculus has already mentioned that USB storage support will be provided for the Oculus Go project in the future.
As mentioned earlier, this new DLC feature is currently in beta and developers are encouraging game developers to "use the distribution channel to experiment before pushing content files or DLCs to real-time users" and promise to support Oculus Rift's DCL features "Coming soon".
