Microchip (Microcore Technology, Inc.) announced the introduction of a new family of microcontrollers (MCUs), the PIC24FJ128GC010. The family is an analog system-on-chip that integrates a complete analog signal chain, including Microchip's first on-chip precision 16-bit ADC and 10 Msps 12-bit ADC; and a DAC, two op amps (op amps) ) and ultra low power technology (XLP) that extends battery life in portable medical and industrial applications.
This combination of analog integration and low power consumption reduces the system cost and noise of the application and increases its signal throughput. Suitable applications include portable medical monitoring devices such as blood glucose meters and sphygmomanometers, as well as industrial applications such as portable monitoring devices such as voltage and current monitors, gas sensors and high speed sensor arrays. The PIC24FJ128GC010 family integrates an LCD display driver that can drive up to 472 segments to support informative user displays (including alphanumeric scroll bars). The integrated USB enables medical devices to upload clinical data and serve as a service/data port for industrial devices. The devices also feature an on-chip mTouch peripheral to support capacitive touch sensing.
By integrating a 16-bit ADC, USB, and LCD into a low-power MCU, battery-powered applications with very small form factors are easy to implement. The PIC24FJ128GC010 family offers significant cost savings compared to multi-chip implementations, enabling lower noise, faster throughput, smaller PCB size and faster time to market.
Joe Thomsen, Director of Microchip MCU16, said: "Designing high-precision analog circuits is a challenge. With the introduction of this latest line of intelligent analog microcontrollers, Microchip makes analog design easier. We focus on our customers, focusing on their end products, debugging noise. And communication, giving designers the ability to achieve unified analog performance across a wide range of applications. We have also created a comprehensive starter kit that allows customers to create their own software, hardware and sensors. Board, thus significantly reducing development time."
Development support
Microchip supports the PIC24FJ128GC010 family for the MPLAB Starter Kit (part number: DM240015) for the PIC24F Smart Integrated Analog Series. The toolkit focuses on the integrated simulation of the series to keep the signal intact. It provides 95% of the tools a designer needs to develop a handheld analog prototype. What the designer needs to do is add sensors.
Supply
Samples and production quantities of the new PIC24FJ128GC010 MCU family are available. The PIC24FJ128GC010 (128 KB Flash) and PIC24FJ64GC010 (64 KB Flash) are available in 100-pin TQFP and 121-pin BGA packages. The PIC24FJ128GC006 (128 KB Flash) and PIC24FJ64GC006 (64 KB Flash) are available in 64-pin TQFP and QFN packages.
