Amazon's Alexa and Google's Google Assistant are the two most powerful voice assistants at the moment. The two are scrambling to sneak around, not only in the pan-smart hardware field, but also in the auto market.
According to Bloomberg, Amazon hopes to let its voice assistant Alexa enter the car earlier than Google Assistant through open source software. A working group has been set up about a month ago and meets once a week with the goal of preparing the software by June.
Amazon engineers are working with Nuance Communications and Voicebox Technologies to write code that makes in-vehicle applications compatible with several speech recognition technologies, eliminating the need for developers to have multiple versions.
The problem is that these cars must use AGL (AutomoTIve Grade Linux), an open source platform developed by automakers such as Toyota, Ford, and Honda to support all software running in the car. The cars currently on the system are only Toyota's new Camry, Sienna and Japanese plug-in Prius, but the company plans to expand the list.
In addition, AGL members have also grown, reaching 114 now, compared with only 90 a year ago. Amazon joined the platform last month.
Amazon's product director John Scumniotales said in an email: "With Alexa integrated into AGL, the process of developing a voice experience has been greatly simplified, which will accelerate the promotion of voice services in the automotive field. AGL has the opportunity to expand the voice experience extension To the entire automotive industry."
Amazon's goal is to connect people and Alexa seamlessly between their home and car. At this point, Google and Amazon have begun a tit for tat competition.
Last month, at CES in Las Vegas, Google announced that Google Assistant will serve all cars running Android Auto software. Amazon also reached an agreement with Toyota to install Alexa on Toyota. In addition, Amazon has signed similar agreements with Ford and BMW.
The car is a very large market, so becoming the leading system of the car is very important to maintain the leading position of the voice assistant. However, this war has only just begun, and it remains to be seen who can grab the first move.
