Arm launches PSA security architecture to escort IoT connected devices

While the Internet of Things is developing rapidly, network security has become the biggest problem. In the basics of the Internet of Everything, to ensure the security of the Internet, we can enjoy without any worry. Therefore, Arm believes that a common way to solve these problems is the so-called PSA - platform security architecture.

With the large-scale development of the Internet of Things, security is no longer a dispensable option, but it is very necessary. Therefore, Arm introduces a common security architecture (PSA, Platform Security Architecture) for hardware IP to implement the security of large-scale connected devices. This initiative will lay a credible foundation for the Internet of Everything, thus accelerating the grand vision of “connecting one trillion devices worldwide in 2035”.

Ian Smythe, senior marketing director at Arm Computing, said at the Arm Technology Forum in Shanghai recently that Arm's history of security dates back to 2000, when Arm developed SecurCore for smart card payments and SIM cards. Since then, hardware-based TrustZone technology has been developed and investments in security have continued to increase, including the recent introduction of Mbed Cloud and new technologies related to PSA. “Our vision is to be able to scale and to escort teraflops of connected devices.”

In his view, to achieve this vision, we must first ensure the safety of very small, small-volume equipment, because it will have an important impact. At the same time, we must achieve large-scale development. In the future, hundreds of chip manufacturers will participate in the environment. Thousands of OEMs will manufacture their products to build an embedded system. There will also be millions of R&D personnel based on Arm. The system writes the software to run the program. Therefore, we must also achieve diversification.

Therefore, Arm believes that a common way to solve these problems is the so-called PSA - platform security architecture.

According to reports, PSA mainly consists of three parts. The first part (Analyze) is to fully understand the risks and threats; in addition, to create the architecture specification of software and hardware (Architect); the last step, about implementation (ImplementaTIon), that is Help relevant people make it possible in a physical environment.

Arm proposed a 4-step model for IoT-related standards. First, the identity of the device must be unique; second, a known known launcher; third, if any potential problems occur, software upgrades must be implemented; fourth, certificate-based authentication, that is, ensuring The devices that communicate with you are indeed trustworthy, not fake devices.

“We believe that security is a shared responsibility. Arm proposes a digital contract that refers to the integration of all partners into our ecosystem. This includes everything from device chips, software, security to systems and Companies such as Cloud and other eco-chains, including Alibaba Cloud, Baidu, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, BT, Vodafone, Softbank, Cisco, etc., are all part of this ecosystem," said Ian Smythe.

He stressed that PSA will bring about a fundamental change in the security of the Internet of Things, leading the entire ecosystem to establish a set of basic guidelines to reduce development costs, time and risk in response to IoT security issues.

At the same time, Arm also provides a new security IP to enhance the security of the Arm Cortex processor-based IoT chip. The new security IP hardware is mainly composed of two parts, one is the new series of Arm CryptoIsland-300 highly integrated security subsystem, and the other is the Arm SDC-600 security debugging channel.

At present, Arm is actively working to enable its partners to fully conduct PSA architecture testing, hoping to make it more complete before the official release of specifications and software in the first quarter of 2018.
