A protection circuit using diode rectification and low forward voltage drop characteristics is shown in Figures a and b. As shown in (a), when the output voltage is higher than the input voltage, VD1 is turned on, and when the output voltage is lower than the ground potential, VD2 is turned on, thereby protecting the power supply. VD2 uses a Schottky diode with a reduced forward voltage. Figure (b) shows the diode series protection circuit. When the output is higher than the power supply voltage, VD1 is turned off, thus protecting the power supply. However, in normal operation, there is a 0.6V forward voltage drop of VD1, which will reduce the output voltage, so it is compensated by the VD3 output voltage.
