LED bulb prices continue to fall below 2,000 yen

In June 2009, Sharp introduced LED bulbs of around 4,000 yen, and major companies competed to follow, making the low price of LED bulbs rapidly advance*1, reference 1). Then, in December, just after about half a year, LED bulbs with a cheaper price of around 2,000 yen were listed.

One of them is the "Luminous" series (hereinafter referred to as Luminous bulb) developed by Japan's Orion Electric (headquarters: Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture) and Doshisha, which was launched on December 14, 2009 (Fig. 1(a) ). The power consumption is 6.6W, the total luminous flux is 420lm (white), and the equivalent of 60W incandescent lamp is sold at 2480 yen (including tax); the power consumption is 4.7W, and the total luminous flux is 310lm (white). The product equivalent to a 40W incandescent lamp is being sold at the price of 1980 yen (including tax)*2.

After that, the Otsuka Chamber of Commerce in Japan listed the LED bulb "Lumidas-CL" series (Fig. 1(b))*3 developed by FAWOO Technology of Korea on December 22 at a price of 2,380 yen (including tax). The series is a product with a power consumption of 5W, a total luminous flux of 292lm (white), and a product that is supposed to replace the 20-30W incandescent lamp.

Figure 1: Two LED bulbs that were launched in December 2009, Luminou bulbs developed by Haoliwang Motor and Doshisha, the price of a 40W incandescent lamp is 1980 yen, which greatly reduces the price (a ). The LED bulb "Lumidas-CL" manufactured by FAWOO Techonogy of Korea, which is listed on the Otsuka Chamber of Commerce, is characterized by its slender shape and heat dissipation from the inside of the air hole through the central portion of the fin (b).

Equipped with dozens of LED packages

"The development of the work for the 1980 yen" (Doshisha's lifestyle business unit, director of lifestyle goods, director of the company) Luminous bulbs to achieve low price is the key to a large number of small LED packages (Figure 2). They are equipped with 40 LED packages equivalent to 60W incandescent lamps and 34 LED packages equivalent to 40W incandescent lamps.

Most manufacturers use an LED package with an input power of 1W*4 in the original LED bulb. The Luminous bulb is equipped with an LED package with an input power of more than 100 mW. Although a large number of LED packages are required, Doshisha said "can reduce the total cost of LED packaging."

However, since it is necessary to package a large number of LED packages, there is a problem that it is difficult to reduce the area of the package substrate. In this regard, many leading manufacturers are considering whether it is suitable for existing lighting fixtures, so the same diameter as the incandescent lamp is less than 60mm, and the Luminous bulb can be increased by 4mm to 64mm.

It is reported that the use of small LED package is conducive to improve heat dissipation. Since the small heat source is distributed on the LED package bottom plate, there is no place where the temperature rises, and the temperature of the bottom plate tends to become relatively uniform.

The LED package backplane of Luminous bulbs is a Metal Base in a product equivalent to a 60W incandescent lamp, and a resin base plate rather than a metal substrate in a 40W incandescent lamp. Doshisha said, "It is not necessary to use a metal substrate with excellent thermal conductivity but high price in a product equivalent to a 40W incandescent lamp with a small LED package and a small amount of heat." The product equivalent to a 40W incandescent lamp uses a low-cost base plate and contributes greatly to the price setting of less than 2,000 yen.

Figure 3: The structure of Lumidas-CL (top) uses a hollow shape with a tapered top and a three-layer structure of lenses, mirrors and heat sinks from the outside. The LED package is packaged on a toroidal base plate and then mounted on the root of the heat sink.

Ring configuration LED

Lumidas-CL, like Luminous bulbs, also uses a number of methods equipped with small LED packages. The number of LED packages is 20. In addition, a low-cost structure that takes into consideration the ease of assembly is used. For example, a SN is not required for bonding in the assembly of the resin case, and the connection of the LED package substrate, the power supply circuit board, and the lamp socket is used. Other methods than welding. Lumidas-CL has obtained the safety standard certification for Korean LED lighting products.

The appearance is a unique slender shape that looks like there is no heat sink at first glance, and the heat sink is actually mounted in the center of the bulb (Figure 3). A three-layer structure of a lens (Lens), a reflector, and a heat sink from the outside is used, and an annular LED package substrate is mounted on the root of the heat sink (near the lamp socket).

Air is left on the surface of the lens, and air can enter and exit between the through hole in the central portion of the heat sink and the outside. In other words, Lumidas-CL uses a structure that dissipates heat from the inside of the through hole of the heat sink.

Further, in order to facilitate the circulation of air, a slit is provided in the power supply circuit board disposed under the heat sink, and a slit is provided in the resin case at the lower end of the bulb. Thereby, the air can flow inside the bulb from top to bottom. (Reporter: Nakayama, Yoshida)

Toshiba Lighting Technology is equipped with a large package in a high-output product with a power consumption of 8.9W and a total luminous flux of 810lm. Sharp has a large package in a small bulb model that supports the E17 lamp socket.

Through-wall Terminal

The through-wall terminals can be installed side by side on panels with thicknesses ranging from 1mm to 10mm, and can automatically compensate and adjust the thickness of the panel to form a terminal block with any number of poles. In addition, isolation plates can be used to increase air gaps and creepage distances.
