Today, in the continuous development of China's steel industry, steel quality is the "magic weapon" for the survival of enterprises. Steel is an alloy of iron and C (carbon), Si (silicon), Mn (manganese), P (phosphorus), S (sulfur) and a small amount of other elements. In addition to Fe (iron), the content of carbon and sulfur plays a major role in the mechanical properties of steel. Sulfur is a harmful component of metal materials in the detection of metal materials. Therefore, the detection of sulfur has become a routine inspection item for the detection of metal materials. The result of the test is one of the important judgments on the difference between material quality and performance.

In the detection of metal materials, the method of determination of sulfur:

1. The sample is burned at high temperature to convert sulfur into sulfur dioxide. After absorption, it can be determined by various methods, such as iodometric method, conductance method and infrared absorption spectroscopy.

2. The sulfur in the sample is converted into sulfate and separated by removing the interference component and then determined by the barium sulfate weight method.

3. The sample is dissolved in an oxidizing acid solution and an oxidizing agent is added to convert the sulfur into a sulfate, and then a reducing agent is added to reduce the sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. After absorption, the measurement is carried out by photometry or potentiometric titration.
