[Qualong Introduces the World's First XR Platform - Qualcomm's XR1 Platform] On May 29, at the press conference held prior to the Augmented Reality Expo (AWE), Qualcomm's subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies launched a global The first XR platform, the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 platform.
According to reports, the XR1 platform can support 4K video experience, support 6Dof interaction and VIO motion tracking. XR1 supports OEMs to develop mainstream terminals. It is claimed that manufacturers such as Meta, Vive, Vuzix, and Pico have developed based on the first dedicated XR1 platform.
The XR1 integrates Qualcomm Technologies' heterogeneous computing architectures, including ARM-based multi-core CPUs, vector processors, graphics processors (GPUs), and the Qualcomm artificial intelligence engine AIEngine. Other key features include the XR software service layer, machine learning, the Snapdragon XR software development kit (SDK), and Qualcomm Technologies' connectivity and security technologies.
On the visual side, the XR1 can support Ultra HD 4K video resolution (4K@60fps) at frame rates up to 60 frames per second, and the XR1 platform will allow consumers to immerse themselves in their favorite movies, shows and sports. The new dedicated hardware and software algorithms in the Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP) significantly reduce unwanted noise in the capture and dramatically improve the final picture in high-quality AR helmets. The platform also has advanced visual processing-based technologies such as visual inertial ranging (VIO) that allow users to move freely in the virtual world or interact with virtual objects in the AR experience.
On the audio side, the XR1 platform uses Qualcomm Technologies 3D audio suite, Qualcommqqstic audio technology and QualcommaptX audio, Bluetooth playback. The XR1 also supports 3D sound effects, and its head-related transfer functions (HRTF) can be used to "customize" the synthesized binaural sound according to the user's ear and ear transmission parameters, allowing the user to feel as if the sound came from a particular location in space.
In terms of interactions, the XR1 supports three-degrees of freedom (3DoF) and six degrees of freedom (6DoF) head tracking and controller functions, allowing users to move freely in the virtual world. The integrated sensor hub and optimized sensor fusion capabilities allow users to experience rich interactions with motion-to-display latency well below the 20 milliseconds required by the technology.
From Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 to 845, Qualcomm continues to increase its support for VR/AR. When Qualcomm released the Xiaolong 845 in December last year, it proposed the concept of XR, referring to the convergence of AR, VR, and MR in one. We all know that the concept of MR is mainly proposed by Microsoft HoloLens, aiming to create a more realistic and immersive mixed reality experience than augmented reality. And perhaps only companies that focus on the underlying technology improvements, such as Qualcomm, can use XR to include everything that changes the boundaries between virtual and reality.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 can be said to be the strongest chip in AR/VR platform, equipped with Qualcomm's latest Adreno 630 vision processing subsystem, which can support 6-DOF indoor positioning, SLAM technology, 6DOF gesture tracking and controller support, Adreno visual focusing , iris recognition, etc. So why did Qualcomm launch the XR1 platform?
One of the first reasons should be that Qualcomm believes that the current demand for the XR market is sufficient to support the cost of R&D dedicated platforms. Qualcomm XR1 main mobile VR, the current mobile VR has three markets: low-cost VR glasses box inserted phone, such as Google Cardboard; affordable high-quality 3Dof all-in-one, such as OculusGo; then high-priced high-quality 6Dof one machine For example, HTCViveFocus, PicoNeo. In these three markets, Qualcomm XR1 focuses on the latter two. In 2017, we have seen a number of VR machines one after another. Many professionals believe that the VR machine is the key to the popularity of VR to mass consumers.
However, the price of the 6Dof VR all-in-one equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is now as high as nearly RMB 4,000. Qualcomm's XR1 dedicated platform is expected to lower the prices of these VR all-in-one machines.
The Qualcomm XR1 can be thought of as a simplified version of the traditional Snapdragon SoC (Qualcomm Snapdragon 835/845), bypassing smartphone-specific hardware such as modems. At present, like OculusGo, the core function provided by the XR1 platform for VR all-in-one machines should be viewing, and VR games that require high-intensity rendering should not be the core.
In addition, the XR1 platform also provides an artificial intelligence engine AIEngine that supports terminal-side processing. The engine allows customers to handle AI use cases and run computer vision algorithms based on high-performance, energy-efficient machine learning to help achieve key AR application scenarios such as better posture prediction, object recognition classification, and more. From the XR1 dedicated platform, we can also see that Qualcomm is paying more and more attention to heterogeneous computing and AI.
