Chile's lithium mining company SQM said that in order to meet the growing demand for lithium-ion mines due to the increase in demand for plug-in electric vehicles, the global lithium industry will need at least 10-12 billion US dollars in investment in the next decade.
Daniel Jimenez, senior vice president of business at SQM, also pointed out that in the next decade or so, lithium demand is expected to increase by 600,000-800,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalents.
This was recently proposed at the Shanghai Metals Conference on Battery Materials, and it is expected that the demand will increase substantially.
Reuters provided further information: "SQM's forecast is based on the typical unexploited investment expenditure per ton of lithium carbonate equivalent. Historically, the industry underestimated lithium demand and overestimated supply."
“The company currently has an annual capacity of 48,000 tons of lithium carbonate in Chile, which will be expanded to 70,000 tons this year and will be expanded to 100,000 tons next year,†said Jimenez.
The Chilean authorities were recently announced to approve the investment of 754 million U.S. dollars for the mining of new domestic lithium mines.
