Chile uses LED lights to control the silver carp photoperiod

Overseas media reported that Chile's Trusal squid farming company has succeeded in trying to change the photoperiod of silver carp by using LED lights. By controlling the photoperiod, energy is saved, the number of precocious silver cod is reduced, and the productivity of cod is improved.

In the project trial, the company selected each 1,000-gram silver carp to start lighting in the evening with LED lights, and the silver carp was exposed to light 24 hours a day. With the use of LED lights, a farm can save about $8,000 in electricity during a single culture cycle (300W for metal halide lamps and 32 W for LED lights). The LED lamp used in the test has only one color gamut (500 nm, green). These LEDs consume less power and do not generate heat in the water or harm the eyes of fish (such as cataracts).

The company also found other benefits of using LED lights, including improvements in feeding, growth, and survival rates, with an average increase in the weight of harvested squid and a decrease in the number of precocious puberty. The harvest of silver carp is one month or even two months ahead of schedule.
