No need for battery sensing system to detect patient physiological data

An international research team consisting of researchers from the United States, South Korea and China has recently developed a new sensor system that can transmit data wirelessly without battery. It can continuously monitor the body temperature and skin pressure of patients in bed.

The research team reported in the journal Science and Translational Medicine on the 4th that the new device consists of 65 coin-sized sensors that continuously monitor the body temperature and skin pressure of bedridden patients within 9 hours.

The author of the paper, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, and Huang Yonggang, a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, explained to Xinhua News Agency that each sensor contains a pressure sensor element, a temperature sensor element and a miniature near field communication (NFC) system. It is equipped with a large near field communication transmitting coil.

Huang Yonggang said that when a person is lying on a hospital bed, the near field communication transmitting coil under the hospital bed and the micro near field communication system attached to the human body are coupled to each other by an electromagnetic field, and the pressure sensor element and the temperature sensor element on the sensor are energized, and The detected signal is wirelessly transmitted to the healthcare provider. Test results show that the temperature and pressure measurements of the wireless sensor are consistent with the measurements of standard wired equipment.

The researchers said that the sensor system collects physiological data quickly and easily, and does not need to invade the human body. It can be used to monitor the circadian rhythm of insomniacs, and also to help early detection of skin ulcers in patients who have been bedridden for a long time. The research team said that in the future, sensor systems that can monitor other physiological processes such as heart rate and breathing will be developed.
